When EMBER launched in 2025, heated clothing didn't exist in South Africa. You could find the occasional import on Takealot with no reviews, no local warranty, and shipping times measured in weeks.

The test

Over three months, we sourced and tested 40+ heated garments. We tested them in Johannesburg (June–August), Cape Town (July), and the Drakensberg (August).

What we looked for

  • Heat output: Does it actually get warm enough for SA winters?
  • Battery life: Does it last a full work day?
  • Build quality: Will it survive a washing machine?
  • Daily wearability: Can you wear it to work?
  • Value: Is it worth the Rand price?
